We may have chatted about this. The old idea was that the fat cushioned the strokes, however fat is mainly water and this doesn't compress so there isn't any cushioning effect.

I totally agree, but I also have a theory that many fat bottomed girls find the cane more painful than some of their slender bottomed counterparts. I have been fortunate to cane a variety of ladies over the years of all shapes and sizes and it has certainly been noticeable that many of those who could not cope with the cane were fat bottomed. I did read somewhere that striking fat is far more painful than pure flesh or muscle, not sure if it's true but it does seem to make sense.
